Democrats Expand Majority On PA Supreme Court

Democrats expanded their majority on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, a potential sign of strength heading into 2024 and another win for a campaign centered on abortion rights. Democratic Superior Court Judge Daniel McCaffery defeated Republican Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas Judge Carolyn Carluccio. The court has had a vacancy since the death of Democratic Chief Justice Max Baer last fall.

The race could directly impact the 2024 presidential election. The court frequently handles election cases, and Pennsylvania was one of many home to court challenges following the 2020 election, spurred by former President Donald Trump’s lies about the election being stolen. The race drew millions of dollars from national groups, as state Supreme Court races continue to garner more attention.
