GOP To Meet Today Ahead Of Possible Speaker Vote

The Republican-led House remains in limbo Thursday as Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) struggles to secure the majority of votes needed to be elected by the full chamber. On Wednesday, Scalise narrowly topped Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) in a conference-wide vote, winning the majority by 113-99, with nearly a dozen Republicans voting present or for someone else — a significant number since Scalise can lose only four votes on the House floor in a full vote that includes Democrats.

The House is scheduled to convene at noon Eastern time on Thursday. House Republicans are planning to meet behind closed doors at 12:15 p.m. Republicans opposing Scalise cite several reasons: what they say is the lack of a plan to fund the government, no plan to change how Washington works, anger that Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) lost the job and opposition to giving the next person in line a promotion.
