Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla., said he will not support a new Speaker unless they commit to reforming the motion to vacate after Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., was ousted from the speakership. “Nobody has my vote,” Gimenez said. “I think the one-person motion to vacate, I think it’s actually a little bit insane.”
McCarthy agreed to change the process for a motion to vacate when he was elected speaker as a concession, ensuring that just one House member would be necessary to introduce the procedural motion. Gimenez said he thinks that threshold should be at least 50% of the majority party.
