Via email from hate group leader Brian Brown:
During the battle to preserve and protect marriage – a battle that involved numerous state legislative fights and dozens of elections to pass state constitutional amendments – a constant refrain from LGBT activists was that allowing gay ‘marriage’ would strengthen the institution of marriage with the public and provide important safeguards for children.
This argument was a key point made by activist justices on the US Supreme Court in their 5-4 Obergefell ruling illegitimately imposing of gay ‘marriage’ on the nation in 2015.
NOM has consistently argued that abandoning the historic and universal understanding of marriage as the union of a man and a woman would weaken and devalue the institution of marriage, and deprive more children of the overwhelming benefits of being raised by a loving mother and father.
New research indicates that the public’s belief in the importance of marriage has collapsed. Gay marriage has not strengthened the institution. Rather, the LGBT narrative is destroying marriage.
Pew Research polled some 5,000 American adults and asked them how important various things were to living a fulfilling life.
The results were shocking: Only 23 percent of Americans believe that being married is extremely or very important to live a fulfilling life. A third think being married is only somewhat important. Some 44 percent don’t think being married is important to fulfillment.
Parenthood doesn’t fare any better. Having children is extremely or very important to only 26 percent of adults. A third say it is only somewhat important while it is unimportant to 41 percent.
This tragic collapse of public belief in the importance of marriage and having children comes at the very same time when Americans tell researchers that gay ‘marriage’ has been good for society. A poll last year by Pew found that 61% of adults believe that same-sex ‘marriage’ has been good for society.
Taken together, what this polling data demonstrates is that Americans’ attitudes about marriage have been infected by politics, especially the LGBT political narrative on marriage.
