Man DeVos Called #MeToo Victim Charged With Murder

First, from a 2018 New York Times report:

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos signaled on Thursday that she intends to take a hard look at whether the Obama administration’s campus rape policies deprived accused students of their rights, saying that “a system without due process ultimately serves no one in the end.” “We need to do this right, we need to protect all students and we need to do it quickly,” she said.

Among the accused students who told their stories to Ms. DeVos on Thursday was Joseph Roberts, who said he was three weeks from graduating from Savannah State University in Georgia in 2013 when he received an email from the university accusing him of sexual harassment. He was “summarily suspended,” he said in an interview, “pending the outcome of a hearing that never happened.”

Mr. Roberts has been working in Washington with a group called FACE (Families Advocating for Campus Equality), but he said many lawmakers have not listened to him. “This was the first time that I felt like a decision maker, like a government official listened and was sincere and she was patient and she cared,” he said.

The Messenger reports:

Roberts, 42, was arrested on Sept. 7 in a separate incident for the gruesome death of his girlfriend, Rachel Imani Buckner, a recent law school grad whose dismembered body was discovered wrapped in plastic with duct tape along the shore in California’s Alameda County.

“Joseph’s DNA was on the tape that wrapped her body, which meant he was aware she was dead, he was aware she was dismembered,” Robert Hansen, a detective on the case, alleged. “He took an active role in wrapping her body, concealing it in plastic garbage bags.”

A staunch supporter of Trump, Roberts would enter the political fray while living in San Francisco and attending law school at Golden Gate University — the same school Buckner graduated from before she was killed. In 2020, Roberts was elected to serve on the San Francisco Republican Party County Central Committee.

The San Francisco Standard reports:

Two images he posted—one of him standing next to San Francisco’s mayor in black-tie attire and another of an $1,800 receipt for a table for two at the French Laundry—caught the attention of a fellow Republican delegate. The photo with Breed was captioned, “There’s so much more to this story…” However, a spokesperson for the French Laundry said the receipt appeared to be a fake when The Standard shared a copy.

A spokesperson for Breed, Jeff Cretan, said Roberts never dated the mayor or went to dinner at the French Laundry with her. Rather, Roberts briefly came up to Breed at a couple of public events, Cretan said, including one at the San Francisco Symphony, where he and Breed took the photograph posted on social media. “His behavior after that required us to report him to her security/SFPD,” Cretan said in a text message.
