For years, Elon Musk has been outspoken about the dangers of population collapse. As it turns out, the billionaire has been putting his money where his mouth is. The Musk Foundation made one of its biggest ever donations and its largest to higher education — $10 million to the University of Texas at Austin in 2021 to “support research programs,” according to the foundation’s tax filings.
Now, interviews with more than a dozen demographers link the billionaire’s donation to the Population Wellbeing Initiative, a new interdisciplinary research group at UT Austin devoted to the study of population. Musk, who’s fathered at least 10 children, has called UN projections of population growth “utter nonsense.” He has endorsed the disenfranchisement of childless people and praised the merits of child-bearing.

The latest projections by the United Nations suggest that the world’s population could grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030 and 9.7 billion in 2050. It is projected to reach a peak of around 10.4 billion people during the 2080s and to remain at that level until 2100. pic.twitter.com/lnWFm0EI6t
