Zuckerberg: 30 Million Joined Threads In First 12 Hours

CBC News reports:

More than 30 million people have signed up to Threads, Meta’s rival to Twitter, within the first few hours of its launch, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said late Thursday morning.

The number is likely to grow quickly as more Instagram users and social media fans open accounts on Threads. The app is the biggest challenger yet to Elon Musk-owned Twitter, which has seen a series of potential competitors emerge but not yet replace one of social media’s most iconic companies, despite its epic struggles.

“Wow, 30 million sign ups as of this morning. Feels like the beginning of something special, but we’ve got a lot of work ahead to build out the app,” Zuckerberg wrote on Threads at 11 a.m. ET on Thursday.

TechCrunch reports:

Currently, the app has a single feed that shows you posts from both people you follow and people you don’t. On the other hand, Twitter features a “Following” feed and a “For You” feed.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri responded to calls for Threads to have a Following feed and said it was “on the list” of features that the platform would like to add in the future.

Other features that Mosseri noted are “on the list” include the ability to switch between different Threads accounts and the option to edit posts. Mosseri also stated that several basics are still missing from the app, such as the ability to search hashtags.

Also among the features found on Twitter but not yet on Threads is the ability to embed posts on blogs. There is currently no desktop version of Threads, making the site unwieldy at present for use by this here website thingy.
