NBC News reports:
A driver who fled a traffic stop near the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday and fatally struck a pedestrian remains at large, officials said.
The driver was in a 2006 blue Honda Accord when uniformed Secret Service officers tried to stop the car at the intersection of 17th Street NW and Constitution Avenue shortly before 1:30 p.m., Secret Service Uniformed Division Lt. Paul Mayhair said in a statement.
The driver, who has not been identified, initially appeared to stop but then fled southbound, Mayhair said. The driver continued through a red light, striking multiple people at a crosswalk, he said.
The Washington Post reports:
Authorities said a 13-year-old girl, also injured in the crash, was treated at a hospital for injuries not believed to be life-threatening. The U.S. Park Police, which is leading the investigation, said a 75-year-old man from Philadelphia died at a hospital. His identity has not been made public.
Mayhair said the driver of the Honda did not stop and that police are looking for the car, which had Virginia license plate 8718BE.
A D.C. Department of Motor Vehicles website shows that a vehicle with that tag number had three unpaid speeding tickets that, by Wednesday, had accumulated $720 in fines.
