NBC News reports:
A suspect is in custody in the Gilgo Beach murders on Long Island in New York, a law enforcement official and two government officials said today, a case that baffled investigators and captured the country’s attention for more than a decade.
The suspect has been identified as Rex Heuermann, 59, four senior law enforcement officials briefed on the case said. The Suffolk County police and the Suffolk County district attorney are leading the investigation. Those offices declined to comment.
Actor Billy Baldwin said he knew the suspect taken into custody in the Gilgo Beach investigation. “Woke up this morning to learn that the Gilgo Beach serial killer suspect was my high school classmate Rex Heuermann,” the actor tweeted today.
The New York Post reports:
His arrest marks the culmination of what appears to be a slow and methodical probe by investigators, which saw them eventually arrest him at his office in New York City Thursday evening, the police said.
Heuermann was taken in at the offices of his company, RH Architecture, in midtown. The building was still swarmed with police Friday including a New York State Police box truck, two Suffolk Police Highway Patrol cars, a New York State trooper car and a Suffolk County government van.
Investigators haven’t yet revealed when, or how, Heuermann first came onto their radar amid the long-running murder probe. It also wasn’t immediately clear where the DNA was obtained from to build the suspect’s profile.
