American Who Crossed Into North Korea Is US Soldier

The Washington Post reports:

North Korean officials have detained a U.S. national who crossed into the country through the demarcation zone without authorization, a United Nations body responsible for ensuring security on the inter-Korean border reported Tuesday.

The person detained is a U.S. Army soldier, according to two U.S. officials. One of the officials said the soldier was scheduled on a recent flight to the United States but did not get on the plane.

“This was a deliberate decision on part of the service member to cross,” the official said. It is unclear why the soldier missed his flight and why he crossed on his own volition, and the United States is trying to determine his whereabouts and condition, one of the officials said.
