Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan was the subject of a viral social media moment over the weekend, with users trying to decide whether the Republican was drunk or suffering a medical episode of some kind after a bizarre and slurring performance presiding over the House last week.
The clip of Phelan shared by Greg Price on Twitter shows the Texas speaker barely understandable while presiding over the state House.
Initial Twitter reactions suggested he was drunk, and jokes were made. However, other users soon offered a note of caution, indicating that it could be a sign of neurological issue or even a stroke.

Phelan last appeared here last week when the Texas House failed to repeal a moot law that criminalizes homosexuality.
Last month he presided over the approval of a sweeping ban on LGBTQ-themed books in public school libraries.
He first appeared here in 2021 when he banned usage of the word “racism” during a Texas House debate on a racist voter suppression bill.
The final tweet below is from a former GOP Texas state rep who appeared here in 2020 when he declared that “if aliens exist, they need Jesus.”
In 2019, we heard from that guy when he declared that all vaccines are the product of “communist sorcery.”

Interestingly, nobody stopped and asked him if he was okay. The House just kept on debating a bill and Phelan kept on going until they adjourned.
