TX House Panel Calls For Expelling GOP Rep Over Affair

The Texas Tribune reports:

The Texas House committee investigating a complaint about an inappropriate workplace relationship involving Rep. Bryan Slaton voted unanimously Saturday morning to send its report on “Matter B” to Speaker Dade Phelan.

The House General Investigating Committee, which investigates wrongdoing by state officials and agencies, has not identified the subject of its probe, but Slaton, a Republican from Royse City, was seen leaving a closed-door committee hearing on Matter B at the Capitol on Thursday.

A Capitol employee filed a complaint with the committee last month alleging that Slaton, 45, had sex with one of his staff, a woman under 21, and gave her alcohol. The complaint, which was reviewed by The Texas Tribune, said the incident happened at Slaton’s Austin apartment in March.

UPDATE via the Texas Tribune:

A House committee has recommended the expulsion of Republican state Rep. Bryan Slaton after finding that he engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with a subordinate, then acted to thwart an investigation into the matter.

In a speech from the floor, Rep. Andrew Murr, R-Junction, chairman of the House General Investigating Committee, said Slaton’s behavior was “induced by alcohol” that the representative provided the 19-year-old woman.

“Rep. Slaton then acted systematically to influence that subordinate and multiple witnesses to obstruct the investigation,” Murr said.

Slaton, a married Baptist youth pastor, has faced calls to resign by fellow far-right Republicans because Jesus hates adultery. As for Slaton’s March 2023 bill to execute women for having abortions, Jesus is apparently okay with that.
