Baltimore Priest Resigns From College Hospital Board After Being Named In Archdiocese’s Sex Abuse Coverup

The Baltimore Sun reports:

A Catholic priest resigned from his position on the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center’s board of directors after The Baltimore Sun revealed his role in helping to cover-up child sexual abuse within the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

Monsignor Richard Woy, a longtime board member at the Towson hospital, delivered his resignation letter Saturday to Board Chairman Gerard Holthaus after giving word Friday that he planned to do so, Holthaus said.

Currently the pastor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Crofton, Woy is one of five high-ranking priests whose identities were redacted in a Maryland Attorney General’s Office report that detailed the history of child sexual abuse and torture within the archdiocese, as well as the Catholic Church’s efforts to silence abusers and make allegations disappear.

The Baltimore Banner reports:

Survivors of priest sexual abuse gathered Monday outside the Archdiocese of Baltimore offices to demand church leaders disclose the names of all accused clergy and suspend the high-ranking priests who handled complaints of abuse. David Lorenz and other members of Maryland’s chapter of Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests also called on Baltimore Archbishop William Lori to resign and for parishioners to pressure for changes in the church, including new leadership.

Lorenz named all three abusers and five officials whose names have been unmasked. The Rev. Samuel Lupico, the Rev. Joseph O’Meara and the Rev. John Peter Krzyanski are the three priests whose names were made public in a Banner story. “They are all still at large. They are out there. And now that we know those names, children are no longer in harm’s way — in as much harm’s way.” Lorenz said.
