Son Of MT Gov Lobbies Him Against Anti-LGBTQ Bills

The Montana Free Press reports:

David, 32, sat down in the governor’s office on March 27 with a prepared statement about legislation affecting transgender Montanans and the LGBTQ+ community generally, to which David says he belongs. He wanted to talk about Senate Bill 99, a ban on gender-affirming health care for minors; Senate Bill 458, a bill to define sex as strictly binary in Montana code; and House Bill 359, a ban on drag performances in many public spaces.

Sitting across from his father in the governor’s office, with Gianforte’s top health adviser present, David said, he read his printed statement out loud. David, who identifies as nonbinary and uses “he” and “they” pronouns, is the governor’s second oldest of four children. In an April 25 interview, he said he didn’t know what kind of impact lobbying his father, the governor, might have.

From the Human Rights Campaign:

If signed into law, the LGBTQ Erasure Act will prohibit LGBTQ+ people from bringing claims of sexual orientation or gender identity discrimination in areas like employment, housing, public accommodations, health care, credit, and education. It would also require applications and records such as marriage license, death certificates, cemetery interment records, and child support registration to list sex based on type of gametes, eggs, or sperm rather than gender identity.

The bill doubles down on the state ban on transgender students participating in sports consistent with their gender identity and the ban on marriage for same-sex couples (which is unenforceable). On top of their legislative attacks, Republican legislators deliberately misgendered State Rep. Zooey Zephyr during debate last week and are now denying her the opportunity to speak on the House floor.
