The Huffington Post reports:
New legislation from House Republicans aims to prevent local district attorneys from pursuing charges against former presidents.
Republicans have subpoenaed a former prosecutor from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office, denounced the charges as entirely motivated by politics, and scheduled a Monday hearing to accuse Bragg of failing to prosecute real crimes.
Now comes a proposal that Rep. Russell Fry (R-S.C.) said would “prevent political prosecutions” by moving cases against former presidents from state jurisdiction to federal court, where judges are confirmed by the Senate, an institution reliably influenced by elected Republicans.
From Rep. Russell Fry’s website:
Presidents and Vice Presidents are among the most visible politicians in the United States government — making them a target for rogue prosecutors looking to build up their profile and make a name for themselves on the political stage.
Because of that threat, it’s important for Presidents and Vice Presidents to have the option to move their case to a federal court — where judges are confirmed by the U.S. Senate, serve in their role for life, and don’t need to win an election to keep their position.
“I’m proud to introduce the No More Political Prosecutions Act. Politically motivated prosecutors should not be able to wield unwarranted power and target our nation’s top leaders for their own personal gain,” said Congressman Fry.
“This legislation will prevent the political prosecutions of Presidents and Vice Presidents and thwart corrupt prosecutors’ agendas.”
The No More Political Prosecutions Act tweaks existing statute to authorize Presidents and Vice Presidents, who hold the highest positions in our nation, to move their case from the state level to a federal court.
Congressman Fry serves on both the House Judiciary Committee and the House Oversight Committee and is also the Republican freshman class president.
Fry, who has spoken at multiple Trump rallies, was elected in November 2022, unseating one of the few GOP reps who had voted to impeach Trump. In 2015, he was first elected to the South Carolina House when his GOP predecessor resigned in the face of sexual harassment allegations. Fry last appeared on JMG in January 2023 when he was among the 26 GOP reps who refused to back a two-sentence condemnation of white supremacy.
Trump can’t fire his investigators anymore, so the complicit GOP is trying to manipulate the system to create essentially the same effect.https://t.co/gPh7e5aQHI
