The Tennessean reports:
The Department of Justice on Wednesday intervened in a federal lawsuit against Tennessee over the state’s controversial ban on gender-affirming care for transgender minors, asking the court to halt the law’s implementation before it takes effect on July 1.
In March, Gov. Bill Lee [photo] signed into law SB 1/HB 1, which bans gender-affirming care for minors. The law bans medications, such as puberty blockers and hormone treatments for children who identify as transgender or nonbinary. Surgeries are also banned.
The law has been championed by conservative activists and was the first bill introduced in the 113th Tennessee General Assembly. Major medical groups have opposed similar bans in the country, while the Tennessee chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics urged Lee not to sign the bill.
