The Florida Phoenix reports:
Gov. Ron DeSantis and First Lady Casey DeSantis held a reception at the Governor’s Mansion Friday to honor Black History Month, just days after civil rights advocates marched to the Capitol and college students walked out of classrooms in Tallahassee to protest the DeSantis administration’s handling of a college-level African American studies course for Florida high schoolers.
At the event, winners also were announced for student art and essay contests and awards for teachers. Younger winners received a $100 art supplies gift card. The reception celebrating Black History Month came at a time when the month of February is almost over and when the state’s education system is still fraught with criticisms on how African American history should be taught in Florida schools.
