Anti-LGBTQ Texas GOP Rep Jailed On DUI Charge

The Texas Tribune reports:

State Sen. Charles Schwertner was arrested early Tuesday morning on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, according to Travis County sheriff’s office records.

Schwertner, a Georgetown Republican, was booked into the Travis County jail at 2:12 a.m. and charged with driving while intoxicated. Records showed Schwertner was still in Travis County sheriff’s custody most of Tuesday morning. He is an orthopedic surgeon by trade.

Schwertner, 52, has faced other scandals in the past. In 2018, he was accused of sending sexually explicit photos of his genitals to a graduate student at the University of Texas. He denied the allegations, saying that someone else sent the messages using his LinkedIn account and another messaging app that belongs to him.

Schwetner first appeared on JMG in 2017 as a proponent of an anti-trans “bathroom bill.” In 2021, Gov. Greg Abbott signed his bill allowing no-permit open carry.

Regarding the above-cited sexting scandal, Schwerner, who is married, reportedly sent this message to the student: “Sorry, I just really want to fuck you.”

From Wikipedia: Schwertner was named one of the “Worst Legislators” in Texas by Texas Monthly magazine in 2015 and 2017 calling him “mean-spirited and insecure” and citing an incident where he “silenced an abortion rights witness by slamming his gavel down so hard that it broke the glass tabletop of his desk.”
