NBC News reports:
Three New York City police officers were injured after being attacked with a machete near New Year’s Eve celebrations in Times Square, authorities said.
The incident happened just after 10 p.m. ET at West 52nd Street and 8th Avenue, just outside of the high-security zone where revelers are screened at checkpoints, officials said at a news conference early Sunday.
The suspect approached an officer and attempted to strike him over the head with the machete, Commissioner Keechant Sewell said. He then struck two officers in the head with the blade before being shot in the shoulder and apprehended by police, Sewell said.
The New York Daily News reports:
One of the injured officers, an eight-year veteran, suffered a cut to his head, Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said. The second officer, who graduated from the Police Academy on Friday, suffered a “large laceration” and a skull fracture, the commissioner said.
“One of the officers fired their service weapon, striking the subject in the shoulder,” Sewell said. Workers at a halal stand near the scene heard what they thought were explosions that may have been gunshots.
“I heard the sounds only — Bang! Bang!” recounted one of the workers, Prodip Bisws. “People were running, oh my god, they were running.”
The New York Post reports:
The alleged Islamic extremist who attacked multiple NYPD officers with a machete near the New Year’s Eve ball drop in Times Square has been identified as 19-year-old Trevor Bickford, multiple law enforcement sources said Sunday.
Police sources said the FBI in Boston has an open case on him and he is on something called a guardian list because of his radicalization. Bickford’s aunt notified authorities because he apparently made statements to her indicating a desire to go fight in Afghanistan, police sources said.
