The New York Times reports:

On the 12th vote for speaker Friday afternoon, Representative Kevin McCarthy of California finally managed to move 14 right-wing holdouts into his camp but still fell short of the votes to become speaker, after 14 Republicans who had previously voted against him swung their support following a broad series of concessions.

The movement was what Mr. McCarthy had forecast and needed to deliver to show enough momentum to remain in the race, though it was not sufficient to cement the job that he has failed repeatedly to win over four humiliating days and 11 defeats. This speaker fight is the longest of its kind since 1859, and has frozen the House in a state of paralysis.
