Jan 6 Committee’s Final Report: Ban Trump From Office

The New York Times reports:

Declaring that the central cause of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol was “one man,” the House committee investigating the assault delivered its final report on Thursday, describing in extensive detail how former President Donald J. Trump had carried out what it called “a multipart plan to overturn the 2020 presidential election” and offering recommendations for steps to assure nothing like it could happen again.

It revealed new evidence about Mr. Trump’s conduct, and recommended that Congress consider whether to bar Mr. Trump and his allies from holding office in the future under the 14th Amendment’s ban on insurrectionists. “The central cause of Jan. 6 was one man, former President Donald Trump, whom many others followed,” the report said. “None of the events of Jan. 6 would have happened without him.”

NBC News reports:

While John Eastman has been singled out as the person who carved out novel and unusual legal theories that would have prevented Biden from becoming president, committee members said in the report that it was actually Kenneth Chesebro who was the architect of a fake elector plot that might have put Trump back in the White House.

“The fake elector plan emerged from a series of legal memoranda written by an outside legal advisor to the Trump campaign: Kenneth Chesebro. Although John Eastman would have a more prominent role in advising President Trump in the days immediately before January 6th, Chesebro … was central to the creation of the plan,” the report says.

Forbes reports:

Donald Trump’s central role in the Jan. 6 insurrection was squarely laid out in the House Committee’s highly anticipated 845-page report released Wednesday, which blamed the former president alone for triggering the deadly riots as he attempted to overturn the results of the 2020 election, and recommended the 2024 hopeful be barred from holding government.

Multiple far-right groups were “galvanized” not just to attend, but to incite the unrest on Jan. 6, 2021, by Trump’s tweet weeks before the fateful “Stop The Steal” rally that read: “Big protest on D.C. on January 6th. Be there. Will be wild” —according to the report, created a “‘fire hose’ of calls to overthrow the U.S. government.”
