Sadly and tragically, the United States Senate – with the collusion of twelve turncoat Republican Senators who betrayed their party platform and the votes of 50 million Americans who enacted state constitutional amendments defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman – have voted to impose same-sex ‘marriage’ on the nation.
The 62-37 vote yesterday was technically to end a filibuster on HR 8404, the misnamed Respect for Marriage Act, but the legislation will be formally passed by the Senate in the next day or two by a similar margin.
The legislation will return to the House for another vote and we must fight it there, even though it’s passed the House previously. Assuming it does pass the House President Biden has promised to sign it into law.
This is a very disappointing development. It feels like a punch in the gut from people who regularly portray themselves as conservatives and people of faith, yet who have voted with the radical homosexual lobby and the most extreme elements of the Democrat party. Be assured that we intend to hold them accountable.
In the short term, this legislation won’t change much since same-sex ‘marriage’ was previously imposed by a narrow 5-4 vote of the Supreme Court in 2015 in the Obergefell decision.
But over time, the institution of marriage will be further harmed, people of faith will be further targeted and attacked, and NOM’s work has gotten harder.
The passage of HR 8404 will likely make no difference to the US Supreme Court if and when it gets an opportunity to revisit their holding in the Obergefell case.
But it does make our work at NOM harder. Not only do we have the challenge of bringing and winning a new marriage case before the Supreme Court, we also have to undo the damage of HR 8404.
This period of the year is the most important time for NOM in terms of fundraising, and is especially so now with these additional challenges that have been added to our workload.

The Republicans who betrayed us in passing HR 8404 are hoping that you will forget about their vote and focus on other issues.
