Miami’s ABC affiliate reports:
Police arrested a 22-year-old man accused of attacking a canvasser handing out political flyers on Sunday evening in Hialeah. According to the police report, the victim was distributing flyers at about 6:30 p.m. at East 60th Street and First Avenue when Javier Lopez attacked him. The victim was campaigning for Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, who is running for reelection against Democratic Rep. Van Demings, the former police chief of Orlando.
“Last night one of our canvassers wearing my T-shirt and a (DeSantis) hat was brutally attacked by (four) animals who told him Republicans weren’t allowed in their (Hialeah) neighborhood,” Rubio tweeted. But a Hialeah police arrest report makes no mention of any additional attackers or any stated political motivation. The report mentions an unidentified individual who appears to have intervened in the attack, but police wrote that that person attacked Lopez, rather than the victim.
The Miami New Times reports:
In a 2021 interview with the Daily Dot, Monzon, who was running for a seat on the Hialeah City Council at the time, claimed to have resigned from the white nationalist group League of the South in 2018 after five years with the outfit. He told the Daily Dot he regretted using slurs against Black and Jewish people during his time with the group.
Monzon was arrested in August 2017 after charging at a crowd with a Confederate flag during a Confederate street-name protest in Hollywood, according to a police report.
He also was identified as an attendee of the deadly 2017 Unite the Right rally a few weeks earlier in Charlottesville. Former and current members of the Vice City Proud Boys were at the hospital and refused to grant entry to the room.

FYI, this isn’t any ordinary canvasser.
This is Christopher Monzon, aka the “Cuban Confederate,” who marched alongside neo-Nazis at Unite the Right in 2017. And he’s deeply active in Miami GOP politics. @MiamiDadeGOP ? https://t.co/3dCzeB7Qjt

He was also charged with assault and pleaded guilty for assaulting a group of BLM protesters in 2020. I don’t think he was “canvassing”. I’m sure the full story will come out, and Rubio will end up with egg on his face yet again.https://t.co/EOseX4WdQq
