Republican AGs Win Stay On Student Debt Relief Plan

The New York Times reports:

A federal appeals court on Friday temporarily halted President Biden’s student debt relief plan, preventing the government from moving forward with the debt cancellation it had said could start as early as next week.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit granted a stay in response to an appeal filed by six Republican-led states after a district court judge dismissed their case on Thursday for lack of standing.

Once any debt is canceled, “the states will be unable to remedy the full scope of all the harms they are experiencing,” the state attorneys said. The states pursuing the lawsuit are Nebraska, Missouri, Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas and South Carolina.
