The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reports:
Hurricane Ian was poised to crash into Southwest Florida Wednesday and into the history books as one of the worst storms to hit the area in modern times, bringing massive storm surge, incredible amounts of rain and some of the strongest winds of any hurricane to impact Florida.
Ian surged to a near Category 5 hurricane – the highest wind category – early Wednesday with 155 mph sustained winds. Extensive wind damage is certain near landfall, but the array of flooding impacts from Ian’s rain and powerful storm surge will be just as catastrophic.
The hurricane was forecast early Wednesday to make landfall later in the day somewhere between Englewood and Fort Myers along the Charlotte County coast, but the impacts from the storm will be far and wide, stretching across the entire Florida peninsula.

Gov. DeSantis says it’s too late to evacuate if you’re in Charlotte County. The hurricane will make landfall here later today, so you must switch to hunkering down to wait it out.
