Florida Teacher Berates Student Over Not Standing For Pledge: “Where Are You From, Mexico Or Guatemala?”

The Insider reports:

A Florida school district removed a high school teacher who was recorded using racist rhetoric to admonish a student who didn’t stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.

A TikTok of the Wednesday incident has amassed more than 1.4 million views as of Saturday. A spokesperson for Manatee County Schools told Insider that the district launched an investigation into the matter.

The video shows a male teacher at Bradenton High school berating a student who appears to be Latino over his apparent refusal to stand and salute the flag. The video is captioned: “my friend didn’t stand for the pledge and this what the teacher said.”

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reports:

He was removed the same day as the incident and was reassigned to a position where he no longer has contact with students, district spokesperson Michael Barber wrote in an email. The district’s investigation is ongoing, he said.

In the video, the teacher suggests the student go back to where he came from. He asks the student if he’s from Mexico or Guatemala. “I was born here,” the student said. “You were born here, and you won’t stand up for the flag?” the teacher responded.

In Manatee County, students are required to stand unless they have something in writing from a parent or guardian asking to excuse them, Barber said. However, he said it doesn’t excuse the teacher’s behavior.
