Death Penalty Phase Begins For Parkland Mass Shooter

Fort Lauderdale’s CBS affiliate reports:

The defense in school killer Nikolas Cruz’s sentencing trial is about to speak to the jury for the first time and present why they believe he committed the shooting rampage. The best result for the defense would be life in prison without parole for the confessed killer, and it needs only one juror to agree, since a death sentence would have to be unanimous.

The defense will be presenting mitigating factors in Cruz’s life such as his late mother abusing alcohol and drugs, mental illness, his adoptive father dying in front of him when he was 5, being bullied by his younger brother, and his adoptive mother dying less than four months before the massacre.
