Youth Pastor Found Guilty On Five Counts Of Child Rape

A man who worked as a youth pastor at a church in Madison was found guilty Thursday night of five felony counts of second-degree sexual assault of a child.

A jury reached its verdict in the case against Glen Uselmann, 63, just before 8 p.m. Thursday after just over four hours of deliberations, online court records show.

Uselmann, who served as a youth pastor at Calvary Gospel Church on the city’s east side, according to the Cap Times, was charged with repeatedly abusing a girl from 1988 to 1992, starting when she was 12.

The complaint states that Uselmann, who was then in his 30s, first started sexual behaviors with Rebecca Byrd when she was 12 years old and continued for more than four years.

“It was allowed; if anything, it was encouraged. Their behavior progressed and progressed, and I ended up marrying him when I was 18 years old,” Byrd said.

The criminal complaint also outlined a broader issue at Calvary Gospel, one in which the preying on young girls by older men was not only tolerated but actively defended by some in the church.
