Raleigh’s NBC News affiliate reports:
Cawthorn, just two years ago seen as a rising star in the party, had faced fierce intraparty opposition and a string of high-profile gaffes. But Cawthorn retained the support of former President Donald Trump, who said this week that the 26-year-old deserved a “second chance” despite making “foolish mistakes.”
Top state lawmakers and North Carolina’s Republican U.S. Sens. Thom Tillis and Richard Burr endorsed Edwards.
On the campaign trail, Edwards sought to present himself to voters as the moderate, pragmatic alternative to a flamboyant, internet-savvy opponent. Edwards also argued he could best defeat a Democrat in the general election by bringing minimal baggage into such a contest.
Cry more, lib.

Cawthorn has left the party & will not give any more remarks this evening. Spox Luke Ball says they want to wait until every vote is counted and a recount is a possibility depending on where final results end up. He said to look for a statement on Twitter when the time comes.
