The Washington Post reports:
First lady Jill Biden made an unannounced visit to Ukraine on Sunday, stopping at the border town of Uzhhorod after visiting a refugee processing center in Slovakia. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made his own unannounced stop the same day in Irpin, a suburb of Kyiv devastated in the early weeks of the Russian invasion.
During the rare trip for the spouse of a sitting president, the first lady said she wanted to make the Mother’s Day stop to show that the “people of the United States stand with the people of Ukraine.” In Irpin, the city’s mayor wrote that Trudeau, who plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, was “shocked” at the ruin he found.
