Riot Police Assemble For Renewed Covidiocy In Ottawa

The Associated Press reports:

Police wearing helmets and shields made several arrests Friday night in Canada’s capital after facing off against protesters opposed to COVID-19 mandates.

Big-rig trucks attempted to make their way to Parliament Hill as part of the “Rolling Thunder” rally, organized by Freedom Fighters Canada, a group dedicated to speaking out against COVID-19 mandates.

Many of the protesters were also part of the three-week Freedom Convoy demonstration that gridlocked Ottawa’s downtown earlier this year with big rigs, prompting Canada’s federal government to invoke the Emergencies Act for the first time.

The Ottawa Citizen reports:

Protesters waving flags danced on a concrete barricade on Wellington Street meant to keep vehicle traffic out. Some demonstrators wore “We the Fringe” sweatshirts. One man wore a yellow Don’t Tread on Me flag as a cape. Another man wearing a Freedom Fighters of Canada sweatshirt sported a tinfoil hat. But the scene lacked the energy of the occupation that had Ottawa in its cacophonous grip for three weeks this winter.

The city and police have warned visitors this week they won’t tolerate a reprise of the “Freedom Convoy.” Noise, litter, fireworks and stopping bylaws will be enforced. Vehicles failing to observe no-stopping zones will be ticketed and towed. Bylaw officers will also enforce bylaws forbidding unnecessary vehicle noise, including speakers, as well as open fires and public urination and defecation.

CTV News reports:

Ottawa police say officers moved in to clear an “aggressive crowd” off Rideau Street in Ottawa’s downtown core Friday evening, as demonstrators, motorcycles and vehicles blocked the streets on the opening night of the “Rolling Thunder” biker rally.

The sounds of motorcycle engines and sporadic chants of freedom filled the air of the Parliamentary Precinct in the late afternoon. Just after 7 p.m., a large crowd of people, some carrying Canadian flags, marched from Parliament Hill to the intersection of Rideau Street and Sussex Drive, blocking the road to all traffic.

Ottawa police said Friday afternoon that it was aware of convoys headed to Ottawa for the event, but warned they will not be allowed downtown. Ontario Provincial Police said there will be temporary exit closures on Hwy. 417 through the weekend due to the protest.
