The Birmingham Herald reports:
The Alabama Senate passed its own version of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law Thursday after a surprise amendment to a transgender bathroom bill. At the start of debate Thursday, an amendment was offered that would stop K-5 elementary teachers from “instruction” on sexuality and gender.
The Senate cut off debate on the amendment after several minutes of complaints from Sen. Bobby Singleton, D-Greensboro.
The bill passed the Senate 26-3. Since it was amended, it needs to go back to the House for final approval. In addition to instructional limits, the bill requires students to use school bathrooms and locker rooms that match the sex on their birth certificate.

Senate Minority Leader Bobby Singleton, D-Greensboro, is pressing Shelnutt to give an example of what would be banned in the classroom. Shelnutt is saying he doesn’t think teachers should speak about sexual orientation or gender identity. #alpolitics

Singleton asks if “little Johnny” asking a teacher if he’s a boy or a girl.
Shelnutt: “Little Johnny, you’re a boy.”
Singleton: You just answered the question based on gender. .. according to your amendment, they won’t be able to answer the question that way.” #alpolitics

And Senate Republicans just clotured debate on Shelnutt’s amendment. Vote should take place at 10:31 a.m. Singleton is now threatening filibusters on other bills. #alpolitics

Singleton is now saying the bill (which applies to K-5) doesn’t address pre-K. Tells the Senate that the cloture motion means they can’t address that before the vote. #alpolitics

Singleton: “You messed up, gentleman, because you copied Florida. Stop group thinking and think for yourselves.” Singleton says he’s going to turn the mic over to Sen. Rodger Smitherman, D-Bham, to “finish the sermon.” #alpolitics

Smitherman says the bill targets a community that experiences “hate treatment.” “Now we’re adding more piling on because there’s an audience that’s jubilant and giddy about doing this to this community.” #alpolitics
