The Liverpool Echo reports:
Manchester City defender Oleksandr Zinchenko fought back the tears after embracing Vitalii Mykolenko ahead of his side’s Premier League clash with Everton at Goodison Park.
Both sets of players also took to the pitch showing their support for Ukraine. City first entered the field of play wearing t-shirts with the Ukrainian flag on and had the words ‘No War’ in both Ukrainian and English.
While Everton’s players entered the Goodison pitch with Ukraine flags wrapped around them and “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” by The Hollies played just before kick off.
The Mirror reports:
Everton made sure their pitchside advertising billboards also had the colours of Ukraine’s flag and they did away with their usual air-raid siren pre-match soundtrack.
In his pre-match press conference, City manager Pep Guardiola confirmed Zinchenko was receiving support from his teammates and the club “unconditionally”.
“He is worried. He has family and friends there,” Guardiola said of Zinchenko. “If they are killing innocent people in your country, how would you feel?
