As New York continues to ride a relentless COVID wave into the new year, Gov. Hochul on Friday extended a statewide mask mandate for businesses through at least the end of January and reported another day of record-breaking positivity numbers.
At the close of a year of vaccine jabs and squashed dreams of post-pandemic life, the coronavirus hospital admissions rate in New York State roughly mirrored the clip from the final day of 2020: Almost 8,000 infected New Yorkers were hospitalized.
The fast-spreading omicron strain has lifted statewide daily case counts above 70,000, an unprecedented clip depleting workforces across New York.
