Parkland Mass Shooter To Plead Guilty On All Counts

Miami’s ABC News affiliate reports:

Rather than going to trial, 23-year-old Nikolas Cruz will plead guilty to all 17 counts of premeditated murder and all 17 counts of attempted murder in the Valentine’s Day shooting that killed 17 people and wounded more than a dozen others.

Cruz’s defense team said their client would plead guilty to life in prison without parole only if prosecutors took the death penalty off the table. That offer had been denied by prosecutors.

Rather than going to trial, the case is expected to proceed to the penalty phase. A jury will then be tasked with deciding Cruz’s fate.

In 2018, Cruz registered as a Republican from jail and may have voted for Trump last year as he infamously had placed a MAGA hat in his mother’s coffin and then took a selfie. (Cruz has not yet been convicted of any felonies.) Also in 2018, it was reported that Cruz had called for murdering gays in an Instagram live chat where he made racist, anti-LGBT and anti-Semitic posts.
