Vaccine Refuser Turns Advocate After Hospitalization

An unvaccinated woman in Western North Carolina is urging people to get the COVID-19 shot after a tough battle with the virus put both her and her son in the hospital.

Linda Edwards said she never thought she’d get COVID-19, so she didn’t get the vaccine. “I thought I was healthy enough and that I could escape it,” Edwards said. But she couldn’t escape it, as COVID-19 cases have surged recently in Graham County, where she has lived her whole life.

Her son, Shane, had been airlifted to Mission Hospital and was staying in the room right next to her, but she said doctors didn’t tell her because they didn’t want to worry her. Along with COVID-19, Shane was dealing with renal failure and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
