Archbishop: Deny Communion To Abortion Supporters

The National Catholic Reporter reports:

Amid the growing calls among conservative Catholics to deny President Joe Biden Communion, San Francisco’s Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone has released a new letter calling for public figures who support abortion to be barred from the sacrament.

“Because we are dealing with public figures and public examples of cooperation in moral evil, this correction can also take the public form of exclusion from the reception of Holy Communion,” writes Cordileone.

Last November, the U.S. bishops formed a controversial working group to discuss the matter, which included plans to draft a document on the reception of Communion. The group was later disbanded with plans for the Communion document taken up by the U.S. bishops’ doctrine committee.

Archbishop Cordileone will be familiar to longtime JMG readers as the “father of Prop 8” – California’s successful 2008 public referendum to overturn same-sex marriage.

Subsequent appearances on JMG came when he ordered Catholics not to masturbate, when he was arrested for drunk driving, and when prominent Catholics called on the Vatican to make him the successor to Pope Benedict.

Last year he petitioned to DOJ to enforce obscenity statutes against porn sites. In October, he performed an exorcism at the site of a protest about an early California missionary.

He last appeared on JMG when it was revealed that he had helped lead a Catholic Church campaign against an LGBT suicide hotline.
