Kentucky Republicans Override Governor’s Veto Of Bill Stripping His Authority To Fill Vacancies In US Senate

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports:

The Senate took little more than an hour to override Beshear’s vetoes of 11 Senate bills, including one that would strip the governor of his authority to fill a U.S. Senate vacancy.

SB 228, sponsored by Senate President Robert Stivers and supported by U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, would replace the current process in which the governor appoints someone to fill the remainder of a term when there is a vacancy.

The bill would put in place a process requiring the governor to fill the vacancy from a list of three names given to him by the political party of the person who left office.
