GOP South Dakota AG Involved In Fatal Car Crash

The Daily Beast reports:

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem called a surprise press conference on Sunday evening to announce that the state attorney general, Jason Ravnsborg, had been involved in a fatal car crash the night before. Details were scant but Ravnsborg released a statement saying, “I am shocked and filled with sorrow following the events of last night. As Governor Noem stated, I am fully cooperating with the investigation and I fully intend to continue do so moving forward.”

The Rapid City Journal reports:

Ravnsborg called 911 and was uninjured after the crash, his spokesman Tim Bormann told the Journal. He said he couldn’t comment on any details of the crash. The Attorney General was driving home to Pierre after attending the Spink County Lincoln Day Dinner in Redfield, Bormann said. The event was hosted at Rooster’s Bar and Grill from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., according to the South Dakota GOP’s website.

Bormann said Ravnsborg “drinks lightly” and he doesn’t think he was drinking at the event. Inspectors from the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation — the equivalent of South Dakota’s Division of Criminal Investigation, which is part of the Attorney General’s Office — will help investigate the crash in order to avoid any appearance or actual conflict of interest.

Ravnsborg, a highly decorated veteran, ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate in 2014 in a campaign that was backed by Breitbart. He is one of South Dakota’s three Republican presidential electors.
