FL Reports 7K New Cases, DeSantis Ratings Plummet

The South Florida SunSentinel reports:

Florida clocked in with 7,104 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday and another 62 more deaths among residents. The state has tallied 487,132 cases and 7,206 deaths since the pandemic began, according to the Florida Department of Health. The one-day peak for new cases was July 12, with 15,300 infections.

On Friday, the state reported yet another grim record for COVID-19 deaths — 257 listed on the daily pandemic data report. Nearly 100 of the victims were from Miami-Dade County, one of the state’s hot spots for the coronavirus.

The Miami Herald reports:

Miami-Dade’s Sunday case count also represented a giant drop for a county that reported over 2,000 cases each of the previous 14 days and over 3,000 on four of those days. Also, the average daily positive test rates decreased in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

Though the state-run testing facilities have been closed since Thursday with the coming of Tropical Storm Isaias, the turnaround time in results means that won’t affect the daily case count for several days.

Miami-Dade’s average daily positive test rate also dropped significantly, 19.3% from July 19 through 25 to 16.6 percent July 26 through Saturday.

The Sarasota Herald reports:

In the span of a few months Gov. Ron DeSantis has gone from one of the most admired state leaders in America to one of the most disparaged, with an approval rating that has dropped precipitously as coronavirus cases surged.

Two recent polls indicate more Floridians now disapprove of the job DeSantis is doing than approve. The latest was released on Friday by Mason-Dixon Polling & Strategy. It shows that 49% of Florida voters disapprove of the governor’s job performance, compared to 45% who approve.

That’s a 17 percentage point drop from the 62% of Florida voters who approved of DeSantis in a Mason-Dixon poll from last year.
