The Hill reports:
Vice President Pence told conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh he believes President Trump tapped him to lead the coronavirus task force because of his experience tackling disease outbreaks at the state level as governor of Indiana.
Pence touted his experience combating HIV, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) during his time in state government.
“I think it might be the main reason why President Trump asked me to do this,” Pence told Limbaugh. “I think by putting me over the administration’s response to the coronavirus, the president wanted to signal the priority that he’s placed on this.”
Media Matters reports:
On Monday, Limbaugh falsely claimed that the novel coronavirus strain known as COVID-19 is actually just “the common cold,” but added that it “probably is a [Chinese Communist] laboratory experiment that is in the process of being weaponized” as part of “an effort to bring down Trump” through negative media coverage.
He later went on to claim that the coronavirus was not a major threat, but that the media was only hoping for it to sufficiently evolve to become one. Limbaugh did not repeat or even acknowledge any of these conspiracy theories during the interview with Pence — nor did Pence mention that Limbaugh had been spreading them.
