The Washington Examiner reports:
Social media users, news outlets, and Bernie Sanders himself parroted false reports that those in the Democratic presidential debate audience paid thousands of dollars per ticket after the crowd seemed noticeably hostile towards Sanders.
The debate audience at the Gaillard Center in Charleston, South Carolina on Tuesday was noticeably friendlier to candidates like former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former Vice President Joe Biden than it was to the Vermont senator, a shift from audiences at previous debates.
The Democratic National Committee clarified Tuesday that tickets were distributed in the same way as previous debates: allocated to debate sponsors, Democratic parties and the Democratic presidential campaigns.
False claims about tickets apparently came after at best a badly-worded press release from the Charleston County Democratic Party.
NBC reporter: “It seemed like you were almost arguing & debating with the crowd.”
Bernie: “Ahh, interesting question! You know how much a ticket to the debate cost? $1,750. Most working people I know don’t spend $1750 on a debate.”pic.twitter.com/LlErigZzPm

Out of the nearly 400 tickets that we were able to allocate for this evenings debate, we welcomed hundreds of activists, county party leaders, community leaders, State Representatives, State Senators, candidates, & elected officials from every level of government in SC at no cost

The SCDP did not sell individual tickets to tonight’s debate.

The audience at the debate — tickets to get in cost up to $3,200. No surprise to see Bloomberg get some cheers. Is there any joy in watching this debate?

completely misleading – tickets evenly distributed, multiple candidates were boo’d at different times during the debate, there was no packing the room – I’m here you aren’t; pedling false theories doesn’t help Senator Sanders build a coalition. Not establishment, just truth https://t.co/BUgO6cXWp7
