Politico reports:
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) denounced President Trump’s early morning criticism of Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) on Saturday, labeling the president’s remarks “racist” and hailing the longtime congressman as a “champion” and “beloved leader.”
Pelosi’s condemnation came in response to a series of tweets by Trump, accusing Cummings of being a “brutal bully” and claiming his Baltimore district is “FAR WORSE” and “more dangerous” than the southern border.
Trump asserted that Cummings’s district, which encompasses downtown Baltimore, was the “worst run” in the U.S., claiming that the Maryland city was “corrupt” and that “no human being would want to live there.”
.@RepCummings is a champion in the Congress and the country for civil rights and economic justice, a beloved leader in Baltimore, and deeply valued colleague. We all reject racist attacks against him and support his steadfast leadership. #ElijahCummingsIsAPatriot https://t.co/2LG8AuQrHh

This is love of country??
These are not the words of a patriot. https://t.co/8YjEFMrbyA

If @realDonaldTrump loses in 2020, this will be why.
Every, single day, he subjects the country he was elected to lead to a stream of ugly, divisive bombast. It’s exhausting. It’s destructive. It’s unworthy of a POTUS.
And it would only get worse.
Four more years? Of THIS? https://t.co/d5b175YYpl— David Axelrod (@davidaxelrod) July 27, 2019
And the thing about it is this: @realDonaldTrump may believe in multiplication by division but it doesn’t add up for the American people. The rancor and chaos his daily dose of nastiness creates is a barrier to actually getting things done on tangible concerns.

.@RepCummings is a remarkable human w/clear, moral authority & deep commitment to justice. He’s also a phenomenal Chairman, bringing essential oversight to lawless Administration. Trump shows again he simply cannot match the Elijah’s dignity & grace. https://t.co/a6DmZqNNCs

Baltimore is a part of the country you’re responsible for, Mr. President. And its residents are human beings. https://t.co/8bX53P7HpG

Donald Trump hits new low with his slashing attack on @RepCummings & the people of Baltimore. Cummings is devoted to the common good, Trump to self-enrichment and glorification. “No human being would want to live there” is a better description of his deranged mind. https://t.co/qAEtGjRfXq

Let me tell you a story about Chairman @RepCummings.
Before new members are assigned to Congressional committees, we have to make our case to the chair.
Chairman Cummings was TOUGH. I sat down in his office to make my case for Oversight, and I was quite nervous. https://t.co/u1mRAR5epX

He looked right at me & said: “I am going to ask you plainly: Are you here to do the work?”
People’s lives are at stake in urgent ways on Oversight. He demanded excellence, & was watching my every word.
I said “Yes” &made my best case incl why & how I wanted to be on the cmte.

By the end of the mtg, I had no idea if I made the cut.
If you look at Oversight, it includes many all-stars of Congress.
From @RepRaskin to @RoKhanna, Cummings is a legendary coach who brings the best out of everyone.
He makes the country better. You want to be on his team.

Mr. President, I go home to my district daily. Each morning, I wake up, and I go and fight for my neighbors.
It is my constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the Executive Branch. But, it is my moral duty to fight for my constituents.
