FEC Grapples With “Threatening” Super PAC Names

Politico Influence reports:

How vulgar or threatening a name can you give your PAC? That’s a question the Federal Election Commission is grappling with amid an uptick in PACs with overtly threatening names.

On Wednesday, someone registered a new PAC with the FEC with a long, sexually explicit name that starts “I pegged Donalt [sic] Trump’s Ugly Old Bitch Ass.” It was the latest in a string of PACs with names that are the opposite of the bland PAC and super PAC names that Stephen Colbert satirized in 2011 by creating a super PAC called Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow.

The FEC sent such a letter on Thursday to the Arizona woman whose name appears on the “Donalt Trump” filing. Reached by email at an address listed on the FEC filing, Melinda Upton told PI she hadn’t created the PAC and had asked the FEC to investigate who did. “I am a supporter of our president, think he is doing a great job!” she wrote in the email. “I am a grown woman, that was a childish remark. I Sir am a lady and would never say anything so vulgar.”
