The Guardian reports:
Tommy Robinson, the founder of the English Defence League, is to be freed from prison after the court of appeal ordered that he should be retried on a contempt of court charge.
He has been held at Onley jail near Rugby after receiving a 13-month sentence for breaches of reporting restrictions at Leeds and Canterbury crown courts. At the court of appeal on Wednesday, the lord chief justice, Lord Burnett of Maldon, upheld the Canterbury ruling but said the ruling in Leeds was “flawed” and there should be a retrial.
Robinson, the appeal court said, would be released on bail on condition that he attended the retrial before the recorder of London at a date to be fixed and keep a distance of at least 400 metres from Leeds crown court.
Britain’s The Sun tabloid reports:
The English Defence League (EDL) founder snarled at reporters as he was led from Onley Prison by a friend, accusing the British media of being “liars”. He fumed at journalists: “The British public no longer believe you. I’ve got a lot to say, but nothing to you. To the British public.”
Robinson was sentenced to 13 months in prison earlier this year after broadcasting footage of trial defendants on social media. Robinson supporters wearing ‘Free Tommy’ t-shirts cheered and burst into tears outside the Court of Appeal today, after months of campaigning for his release.
Judges were urged to overturn the original findings against the far-right activist, whose real name is Stephen Christopher Yaxley-Lennon. There were also mass protests against his sentence, with scenes turning ugly on the streets of London as campaigners called for Robinson to be freed.
Robinson’s defense is being funded in part by multiple US-based right wing groups. In addition to founding the extremist EDL, Robinson has a lengthy criminal record that includes imprisonments for assaulting a police officer and for mortgage fraud. Perhaps curiously for a white nationalist, Robinson owns a tanning salon.

Dale Maily met Tommy Robinson’s #EDL mob. A family friendly day out, soaked in beer where people aren’t afraid to call a spade a spade and a Muslim a terrorist. These flag waving, Breitbart loving Katie Hopkins listeners are neo-nazi’s. Make no mistake about it. pic.twitter.com/JKONIQmtg1
