Widespread Visa Card Outage Hits Britain And Europe

The BBC reports:

Customers across the UK and Europe have been unable to pay for their purchases with Visa cards because of a network failure. Some shoppers reported they were stuck in queues in supermarkets and petrol stations as Visa transactions could not be processed.

Banks have advised customers that they can still withdraw cash from ATMs. Visa says it is working to resolve the issue. Mastercard and American Express said they were not affected. Payment processing through Visa’s systems accounts for £1 in £3 of all UK spending, the company said.

The Wall Street Journal reports:

A Visa spokeswoman said the company is investigating. “Visa is currently experiencing a service disruption. This incident is preventing some Visa transactions in Europe from being processed,” she said. “We are investigating the cause and working as quickly as possible to resolve the situation.”

Businesses ranging from pubs to supermarkets took to Twitter to apologize to their customers for the disruption. The Bank of England has been in touch with Visa to get a better understanding of the issue, according to people familiar with the matter.

“This is really terrible,” said Heather Bateman, 29 years old, as she fumbled with her purse while trying to pay for drinks at the Globe pub in central London, where part of the Bridget Jones movie was filmed. “I am going to have to go to the bank and get cash.”
