LIVE VIDEO: Trump Holds Arizona Campaign Rally

The Washington Post reports:

When President Trump finds himself under attack or slipping in popularity, he often holds a rally in a place like this: a diverse blue city that’s home to liberal protesters, but is surrounded by red suburbs and rural towns filled with Trump supporters who will turn out in droves. Unlike rallies in states that are solidly Republican, these events allow Trump to highlight the deep division in the country — and force voters to pick a side.

In Phoenix, campaign organizers expect more than 10,000 supporters to show up to the Phoenix Convention Center Tuesday night and there are numerous counterprotests planned for outside the rally. Local activists say they hope to outnumber the rallygoers, sending a clear message to the president following the Charlottesville rally earlier this month that attracted neo-Nazis and white supremacists.

Reuters reports:

Arizona’s two U.S. senators, who have both clashed with President Donald Trump, a fellow Republican, were expected to skip his campaign rally on Tuesday night in Phoenix, where large protests are planned. In his first such event since causing an uproar last week with remarks about a white nationalist demonstration in Virginia, Trump was expected to make remarks at the rally but not use the event to pardon former Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Neither John McCain nor Jeff Flake, the state’s senators, was expected to attend, said a source familiar with the Flake campaign and published reports, underscoring Trump’s fractious relationship with some in his own party. Republican Governor Doug Ducey told the Arizona Republic on Monday that he would welcome Trump on the tarmac when he arrived but would not attend the Phoenix rally.
