Trump Fires Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, Known For Labeling Gun Violence As Threat To Public Health

The New York Daily News reports:

Continuing its federal shakeups, the Trump administration dismissed Obama-appointed U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy on Friday. Murthy was relieved of his duties effective immediately, and his position will be temporarily filled by Deputy Surgeon General Sylvia Trent-Adams as the White House looks for a replacement, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement.

Murthy, 39, was born in Britain and has degrees from both Harvard and Yale. He was appointed by President Barack Obama in November 2013 and made headlines for labeling gun violence a health threat to the American public. The NRA staunchly opposed his Senate confirmation in 2014. In an interview with health-focused publication STAT this June, Murthy called gun violence a “problem in our country.”
