Trump Threatens The New York Times

Business Insider reports:

President Donald Trump again on Thursday attacked The New York Times for its coverage of him. He tweeted Thursday morning that the newspaper is disgracing the media industry and suggested that he might change libel laws in response. “The failing @nytimes has disgraced the media world,” Trump tweeted. “Gotten me wrong for two solid years. Change libel laws?”

Trump has long criticized the Times for its coverage, both on the campaign trail and on Twitter post-election. The feud erupted again this week when Trump tweeted that the Times “apologized to its subscribers, right after the election, because their coverage was so wrong.” The Times pushed back with a statement saying the newspaper did not apologize.

When he ran for president, he suggested that he would “open up” U.S. libel law to make it easier for people to sue news organizations, though experts noted that it would be difficult for him to actually follow through on that threat.

Notably, it would require getting around a major Supreme Court precedent on press freedom: The 1964 case New York Times v. Sullivan outlined newspapers’ First Amendment protections and established the high bar that plaintiffs must clear to win libel cases against them.

Still, Trump’s comments on libel, coupled with his regular attacks on reporters and news organizations, prompted press freedom advocates and his critics to worry about his posture toward the press during the campaign.
