British Press Slams Trump’s “Unpresidential” Invite To PM: If You Travel To The US, You Should Let Me Know

The Daily Mirror reports:

Donald Trump has raised eyebrows by extending a bizarrely un-Presidential invitation to Theresa May. “If you travel to the US you should let me know” he told the British Prime Minister in their first phone call, according to a transcript leaked to The Times. Overseas visits by the Prime Minister aren’t exactly spontaneous – they cost tens of thousands of pounds and involve filling an RAF Voyager jet.

Likewise, when US Presidents visit Britain they take armoured limos, minibus-loads of staff and helicopters. Twitter users pointed out the invitation sounded more like a holiday than a state visit. “Is he offering a state dinner or a discount at the Trump hotel?” asked one. Another sighed: “He just has no idea, does he?”

The transcript – which The Times said “raised eyebrows” among officials – heaps new pressure on the PM over the future of the Special Relationship. Mrs May was only the 10th world leader to speak to Trump after his shock US election victory and is now begging for a meeting before Christmas.

British papers are also calling it a “snub” that Trump spoke to so many foreign leaders before calling May.
